Parish Council Chairman's Notes

Castle Road
The Parish Council are very aware of traffic problems on Castle Road and have been pressing for action from the police for a long time. We are particularly concerned about its use as a rat run for heavy lorries early in the morning. Last year, the previous Community Beat Officer investigated the problem after numerous requests for action. It has now been agreed that the police will issue speed guns to the Parish Council so that traffic speeds can be adequately monitored at the right times of the day. We hope this will provide the solid evidence we need of the problems residents are experiencing.

Castle Road Again
For some time we have been concerned about the large number of young children playing ball games on the Rec near Castle Road. We are seeking quotations for additional fencing between the gate and Hill View Road so that small footballs, tennis balls and other small balls don't roll into the road.

Bristol Health Service Plan
You may have read and heard about the possible changes to health care provision in our area. If you have not already given your views on the proposals, there is still one more chance to do so. There is a public forum on 16th December in the Council House on College Green, Bristol, where any written submissions will be considered. Full details may be obtained from Sian Parry on 922 2074.

Parking Issues
There are residents in a few parts of Pucklechurch who are experiencing problems with day-long parking outside their houses. Whilst it is not an offence to park on a public street (provided no obstruction is being caused), it is particularly annoying to find that the nearest place to park is several hundred metres from one's house. At present there are difficulties in the Becket Court, St Aldam's Drive area which are being addressed, and I hope resolved before too long! If anyone else has particular problems, please contact any councillor and we try to seek a solution to the matter.

The Future of Our Hospitals
The NHS is currently consulting on its plans for the future of our hospitals. The centrepiece of the scheme is to concentrate acute services (A&E, etc.) on a main site, either Frenchay or Southmead. The one that is not chosen will be downgraded to become a community hospital. There are also plans to provide a new community hospital in Yate. Naturally, these plans will have a major impact on the healthcare local people will receive for years to come. Find out more at
www.northbristol.nhs.uk/future/Strategic_outline_case/

Affordable Housing
Securing housing for young people in particular is a major priority. We have supported calling for 40% of new developments to be affordable housing, even in very small developments, like those in villages. However, the Government Inspector reviewing the Council's Local Plan has said that 33.3% is the highest figure possible. This is still an increase and will hopefully start to increase the number of affordable homes in South Gloucestershire.

Ring Road Roundabouts
Local people will have noticed the major works (and queues) on the Ring Road roundabouts. The Council is installing traffic lights following a major increase in accidents since opening the full Ring Road, and the lights should also help the traffic flow. The Council aims to have the work finished this year.

Castle Road
Residents in Castle Road are concerned about the weight and speed of traffic along this small road. They have signed a petition demanding action before a serious accident occurs. The petition was handed to Pat Hockey, the Executive Councillor for Planning, Transportation, and Strategic Environment, at the Council meeting on Wednesday, 17th November.

Village Community Centre
The problems continue in and around the centre. To make a difference, we have to be positive and name names. We want to be able to meet our friends for a drink, a chat, and perhaps a game of skittles without fear.

Produce Show Results

The 24th Annual Home and Gardens Produce Show was held in the village hall on Saturday, 11th September. Show entries were down slightly this year, but we once again had some new people taking part for the first time. The show was very successful, and we have ended the year with a balance of £248. The Revel Committee have also given us £100, which will help with printing costs. Next year's show, to be held on 10th September, will be our 25th anniversary.

The "Growing Potatoes in a Bucket" class was very well supported, and we had a lot of interest in this. The winning weight of 6 lbs 12 oz was grown by Mr Tony Pratt, second place was Mrs M. Payne with 4 lbs 14 oz, and third was Mrs J. Harris with 4 lbs 2 oz.

Trophy Winners
Mr George Alway: Gardeners' Club Shield (exhibitor with most points in show), President's Salver (Pucklechurch resident winning most points in show), Lloyd's Bank Trophy (most points in flower classes), Willmott Trophy (most points in dahlia classes), Community Association Trophy (Gardeners' Club member with most points in show)

Community Profits from Revel Success

Many villagers think of the Pucklechurch Revel as fun for the whole family. The Revel Committee get great satisfaction from seeing their efforts come together in a week of events enjoyed by all, but they also earn their thanks from the many village organisations that benefit from Revel funds. At the Revel AGM on September 29th, the Committee handed over cheques totalling more than £5,000 to groups that had applied for donations. As usual, the Beer Festival was the biggest earner, contributing more than £3,300 in profits.

The AGM also saw the election of a new Chairman, Cyndi Hill, who has been on the Committee for a number of years. The Committee and the community want to thank John Whelan for his five years of leadership and commitment. We wish John the best of luck as he settles into his new home in the north of England. The rest of the Revel Committee officers were re-elected: Mandi Smith as Vice Chairman, George Hill as Treasurer, and Christine Murphy as Secretary.

The Revel Committee is looking for new members to take on tasks large and small that will help pull together next year's big event. During most of the year, the Committee meets in the Buffs' Lodge adjacent to the Star Inn every four to six weeks, with meetings becoming more frequent as Revel Week approaches. Interested parties may contact Cyndi Hill at 937 3647 or email revel@pucklechurch.org.

Pucklechurch Gardeners' Club

We have had two meetings so far this season. On October 9th Jean Drew took us "Up the Garden Path", and on 3rd November Jan & Roger Bendall of Ivy Cottage Nursery gave a talk with slides on "Plants in the Nursery". Both talks were enjoyed very much.

Our next meeting is the annual Christmas Quiz and Supper for members and their partners, to be held on Wednesday, 8th December, as our normal meeting night is being used by the Pucklechurch Players for the pantomime. There is no meeting in January; the first meeting of 2005 is on February 2nd, when Mary Payne (of TV fame) will be talking about the prairie planting that she has designed for Lady Farm at Chelwood.

If you are interested in joining the Gardeners' Club, do come along to one of our regular meetings at 7.45pm in the village hall -- guests pay only 50p -- and have a chat with any of the committee.

Pucklechurch Community Association

To all parents who live in the village: Are you really sure you know what your children are doing when they go out at night? Are you aware of the problems being caused by some youths to the people who live near or use the Community Centre? Do you realise how much damage they have caused through vandalism at the Community Centre and the intimidation and stress they cause to other people? If you don't want the Playgroup, Badminton Club, Bowls Club, Gardeners' Club, Social Club, Folk Club, Cricket, Football and many other organisations to close down, then please control your children.

We had an informative open meeting to discuss this vandalism on the 7th October in the Village Hall, and the PCA would like to thank the 60 or more people who attended.

We need a new booking clerk for the Village Hall. Please telephone Roger Payne on 937-2653 if you are interested in taking over this position.

Twinning Association

Twinning Quiz Night, 24th September 2004: Many members and their friends spent an enjoyable evening at the quiz night. We would like to thank all those who supported us and Fred Cockle and family for running the show. Total monies raised from the evening were £395.

Visit to Pringy 22nd to 27th October 2004

Once again the Twinning Association had a successful and enjoyable visit to Pringy. Thirty people were able to renew old friendships and be welcomed by new French families. Saturday was spent with our hosts and many chateaux and gardens were visited. For some, it was their first opportunity to experience French cuisine. Sunday we visited Le Chateau de la Ferte de St Aubin. The highlight was a French cooking lesson on Madeleines. The owner of the chateau welcomed us and then demonstrated dressage, as this is one of the few chateaux in France still using its stables.

On Monday we visited the town of Meaux and on Tuesday, Paris. The weather was very kind to us.

Evenings were spent either with our hosts or in groups eating and socialising together. This gave us a good opportunity to practise and develop our French. A formal soiree was held on Monday evening, where we presented Pringy with three frames with images of Pucklechurch past and present.

We sadly said goodbye to our friends on Wednesday morning for our journey home.

If you are interested in being involved with the Twinning. Please contact Lesley Broom 937-2025 or Ann Smith 937-2030.

Cub Scouts

The Cub Scout pack was resurrected in Pucklechurch just over a year ago after a period in suspended animation due to a shortage of adult support. Since re-forming, the pack has been very active with weekly meetings and a variety of weekend events. These have included participation in District competitions and the Avon Jamboree, where the Cubs were able to try their hand at abseiling and circus skills, amongst other things. The culmination of the year's activities, however, was summer camp.

Held over a wet weekend in August, summer camp saw 12 members of the pack and adult leaders join Cubs from Shrivenham in Wiltshire for what was termed as a "back to basics" camp. The programme of activities included archery, fishing, and backwoods cooking, where the cubs were taught how to gut a fish and cook it over an open fire for their lunch. The site was a field with no amenities, and this was the first camp for most of the Cubs, so it was always going to be hard work. The weather didn't help either, but everyone coped very well and can be rather proud of their achievements.

The autumn programme is now well underway and has already included another camping weekend and a Halloween party.

The pack meets on Wednesday evenings, 6.30-8pm, in the Pucklechurch Scout Hut, and welcomes boys and girls aged 8 to 10½ years. We are also on the lookout for more adult help. For more information, contact Ian Jack (956-5247).
