The Sound of Music… Revel 2008

This year's Revel theme is "music and dance" and the main attraction on Revel Day -- Bristol Samba -- should get everyone's feet a-tapping. The theme ensures that the Revel Parade should be both loud and colourful this year. Come out and support community organisations as the floats and walking groups sing and dance their way through Pucklechurch. Note that the route will be a bit different this year, with the parade starting at noon on Hill View Road and proceeding the opposite direction round the village than usual.

There are a number of new events during this year's Revel Week. On Thursday, 12th June, there will be a treasure hunt by car for grown-ups. Meet at the Village Hall car park at 6.45 to register and pick up the set of clues that will take you to the mystery pub. Note that this is not a race and there are no prizes!

Continuing in his father's tradition of raising money for village causes, Jamie Todd is organising a sponsored cycle ride in aid of Revel. The 35-mile ride from Pucklechurch to Weston-super-Mare will take place on Saturday, 14th June. Pick up your entry form at the Pucklechurch Village Sports & Social Club on St Aldam's Drive for more details. There is no entry fee, but participants are expected to raise money for Revel through sponsorship.

Of course, all your old favourites will be happening too. There's something for everyone! The Youth Disco on Friday night, 13th June, is for those aged 11-16, while the Junior Folk Dance on Tuesday, 17th June, is for children in school years 1 to 6. The Pram Race on Thursday, 19th June, is open to all ages, and the adults seem to have as much fun at this as the kids (though the oldies tend get more out of breath).

The whole family can try their luck at the Revel skittles match on Friday the 13th, and join the Revel Ramble on Sunday the 15th. Parents of young children may want to pop into the Mums & Minors open day on Monday, 16th June. It's adults only, however, at the Players' Race Night on Saturday the 14th for low-stakes betting on those thoroughbred wooden horses.

If music is your thing, then hear the St Thomas à Becket choir on Sunday evening, 15th June, at the church's Revel Thanksgiving Service. Or listen to the village's budding musicians at the School Concert on Wednesday, 18th June. Of course, there should be plenty of music and dance on Revel Day itself, with Bristol Samba leading the parade and performing twice in the arena during Revel, as well as performances by Morris dancers and the Black Panthers Cheerleading Troup.

There is even more for kids on Revel Day this year, including giant games for pocket money prices and shows in the children's marquee (a magician and Punch and Judy).

For the sports-minded among you, come support the children of Pucklechurch as they compete in Kwik Cricket on Monday, 9th June, or Tag Rugby on Thursday, 19th June. The kids will also be competing on Revel Day, with the traditional foot races, egg-and-spoon races, and the like.

The popular Pucklechurch Beer and Cider Festival will bring you a fantastic selection of beers and ciders, plus live music by the Mangled Wurzels on Friday night and Rockmungus on Saturday night. Come enjoy a drink or three, plus food from Ultimate Bite in the Star Inn car park.

For more details on all Revel activities, please buy a Revel programme at the newsagent or on Revel Day. Remember that money raised by Revel activities supports all kinds of village groups and facilities. Village groups work hard to organise activities for Revel Week and deserve your support. The money goes directly back into support for your community.

Revel Makes Newcomers Welcome

On a balmy Thursday night in May, the first "Newcomers' Barbecue" was held in the garden of the Rose and Crown. The Revel Committee invited those who were new to the village to come and meet representatives of village social groups… and each other. Invitations were sent to newcomers identified by the recent purchase of a house in the Pucklechurch area, and others saw the posters up around the village. About 50 new residents joined in the fun.

Lovely music was provided by the Pucklechurch Hand Bell Ringers. The Rose and Crown staff served up burgers and sausages, while the Revel Committee offered a complimentary glass of wine. The newcomers weren't the only ones who ate well -- the midges were out in force. It was a wonderful evening nonetheless. Everyone there met at least a few new people.

The Revel Committee deserve a hearty thank you for organising an event that truly fosters community spirit. Thanks also go to the Rose and Crown for hosting the event. Welcome, newcomers! We hope to see you again soon.
