Parish Council Chairman’s Notes

Telephone Box

Thanks to a decision by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport; the telephone kiosk on the corner of Shortwood Road and Westerleigh Road will not be removed as we had been advised some ago, as it is now a listed kiosk. This means that it has to be kept in good repair and maintained by British Telecom in perpetuity.

National Spring Clean

Councillors agreed to support the National Spring Clean campaign on 10th April and cleaned up rubbish in various locations in Pucklechurch. Members of Pucklechurch Guides were also invited to take part as they have done in previous years. Some Councillors who were unable to take part on 10th did their cleanup a few days later.

Goldfinch Way Bus Shelter

Councillors have agreed to install a new bus shelter in Goldfinch Way. We hope this will be in place in the near future. When the winter weather returns, we hope it will make the wait for buses more pleasant than at present!

Pucklechurch News

Councillors were pleased to give the editors of Pucklechurch News an increased budget for the current financial year. We agreed that they have done an excellent job in producing our paper and wish them continued success with it in the future.

South Gloucestershire Council

South Gloucestershire Council has set up a new department for Children and Young People to look after the interests of all young people in our area. This is designed to deliver a joined-up approach to children's issues, including education, social services, and youth services. Find out more on the Web at: www.southglos.gov.uk/SouthGlos/ChildrenAndYoungPeople/

The Council and the Health Committee have been working hard on health issues in general and fighting the proposed downgrading of Frenchay Hospital in particular. Sadly, the local NHS Trust has chosen the Southmead site for the region's future acute care hospital. The decision on whether or not to approve the plan is currently with the Government.

The Council has given its support to the idea of developing a new faith-based secondary school in the next phase of the Emerson's Green development. This school will serve a wide area and be the first secondary school in South Glos where the churches are directly involved.

Money has been allocated to fund 20 new plastic recycling banks across the district to help increase recycling and make dealing with the twin bin scheme easier.

Work is underway on a new five-year transport plan, which will be unveiled soon.

The Council, along with its neighbours, is looking at the future development needs of South Gloucestershire and is considering how many new houses will be needed and where they should go.

Happy Circle

In June Happy Circle will be celebrating its 45th birthday. All those years of providing activities and outings for the older citizens of Pucklechurch are indeed something to celebrate!

We were very sad to hear about the death of a long-time member, Lilly Budding.

At the beginning of May, we went to Bournemouth on our first coach trip of the summer. The planned schedule of trips for the rest of the season include June 7th to Dunster and Minehead (10am-6pm), July 5th to Monmouth and the Wye Valley with a visit to Tintern for afternoon tea (10am-6pm), August 2nd to Weston-s-Mare (10am-6pm), September 6th to Weymouth (9am-7pm), and October 4th to Cardiff (10am-6pm). If you would like to come along on one of our outings, you would be very welcome. Ring Liz Archibald on 937-4054 for more information.

If you would like to join Happy Circle on Tuesday afternoons at 2pm, please contact Pat Woods on 937-3985 or just come along to the Village Hall. Where else can you go for 60p and have tea and biscuits?

Pucklechurch Community Association

At our AGM on the 10th May, it was regrettably announced that Julie Parker has decided to retire from the post of secretary, and Roger Payne is retiring after 14 years as booking clerk. Roger and Julie were both warmly thanked for their hard work and commitment to the PCA.

Anna Sharpe has kindly offered to take over as booking clerk. Please ring her on 937-4449 for details of any booking you may need.

We are still looking for a new secretary, and anyone who would like to join the Executive Committee would be made most welcome. We meet on the second Tuesday of each month (except August) in the Village Hall meeting room at 8.00pm.

Our next meeting will be held on the 14th June. Do contact our Chairman Les Bence on 937-3140 if you need further details.

Pucklechurch Home and Garden Produce Show

The 25th annual Pucklechurch Home and Garden Produce Show will be held on Saturday, September 10. Schedules are now available and will be on sale at Revel. Also available from Tony Pratt, 45 Birch Drive, and Elizabeth Webb, 56 Abson Road.

Pucklechurch Twinning Association

Our village has been twinned with Pringy for 18 years now. At the end of April we welcomed 46 French visitors to Pucklechurch, and our long-lived friendships were strengthened and deepened. Following their arrival at the village hall on Saturday morning, our guests were met by their hosts from Pucklechurch in a sea of double kisses. Members took their guests to their homes and were free for the rest of the day. A number of families had lunch at the Star Inn and then went to Dyrham Park, whilst others went further afield.

Sunday morning saw both French and English leave for Winchester, where our French visitors had a guided tour in French, and their English hosts were free to wander. On our return, we made a brief stop at Stonehenge for photographs.

After our guests returned from London on Monday, we entertained them in the village hall with a buffet and disco, which thankfully this year was trouble free. On Tuesday, they visited the Rhondda Heritage Park and Cardiff. Most evenings families met together to eat, and there was much laughter. We are now planning our return journey in October.

If the idea of making good friends in the village and across the channel appeals to you, come to the Twinning stall on Revel Day or join us on the Revel Ramble. Alternatively, you can phone Lesley Broom (937-2025) or Ann Smith (937-2030). We are a very friendly group and we give a warm welcome to new members.
