Gardeners' Club

On a sunny summer's evening in July, the Pucklechurch Gardeners' Club celebrated its 30th anniversary in Elaine Stone’s beautiful garden. Members and their partners enjoyed a buffet supplied by the committee. A number of founding members attended the supper (see accompanying photo), and Mrs Maude Couzens, who has been a member for many years and recently celebrated her 90th birthday, was presented with a bouquet of flowers.

Gardeners' Club meet on the first Wednesday of the month at 7.45pm in the Village Hall. The new season starts on Wednesday, 4th October.

Happy Circle

Happy Circle members have enjoyed some varied entertainment so far this year, such as wax painting, a slide show about RAF Pucklechurch, music from the Handbell Ringers, and lots more. We held our annual garden party in Don & Pat's lovely garden. We would like to thank them once again for having us and giving us a wonderful afternoon.

It doesn't seem possible that we are nearing the end of our trip schedule. We have one or two places left for Weymouth on 5th September and Morton-in-Marsh on 3rd October. Please see the Pucklechurch website for more details or ring Liz Archibald on 937 4054.

If you would like to join us on Tuesday afternoons in the Community Centre from 2pm-3.30pm, then please come along. You will be warmly welcomed!

Parish Council Chairman’s Notes

First, a ‘thank you’ to the several villagers who took up the challenge to look after a part of the village by undertaking a regular litter hunt. May I encourage more of you to join in and help keep your part of Pucklechurch, Parkfield, or Shortwood tidy.

South Glos Council are currently consulting on a Cleaner South Gloucestershire Strategy. If you would like to take part in the survey, further information may be obtained from the Council website at http://www.southglos.gov.uk/Environment/StreetCareAndCleaning/Cleanersouthgloucestershire.htm, by telephoning 01454 868000 or from South Glos Community Services at Broad Lane, Yate. The period of consultation lasts until 30th September, so you have time to add your views to those of many others.

At the July meeting of the Parish Council, it was agreed to amend our standing orders. Previously, our stated policy was "members of the public may address the Council but must give the clerk 24 hours' notice before the meeting and will be allowed to speak for five minutes".  We have now changed "must give 24 hours' notice" to "should give 24 hours' notice". We hope this will help anyone who has something urgent to bring to our attention within a day of our meeting.

As many of you may be aware, the Council have a duty to provide burial facilities, which we do with the present burial ground adjacent to the Rec. The existing site will be insufficient in a few years' time, so we are now planning on how to extend the present site outwards towards Lansdown Road.  Nothing will happen in the immediate future, but once the decision on how big to make the enclosure has been been made, we will discuss our proposal with any interested groups before beginning any work.

Greenbelt Threat
As residents may know, there is currently a review of Green Belt boundaries underway. This review considers the future of the Greenbelt land between Emerson's Green and Pucklechurch and whether it should lose its Greenbelt designation. Erosion of the Greenbelt might mean that Pucklechurch would be swallowed up by the expansion of Emerson's Green. The Council has now opposed the erosion of the Greenbelt. The final decision, however, will be made next year at a major inquiry that covers the whole of the South West. The inquiry has its own website at www.southwesteip.co.uk where you can comment on the proposals and send in your own opinion about the loss of Greenbelt status for the countryside surrounding Pucklechurch.

Pucklechurch Primary School

A bid for £880,000 of funding to improve the buildings of Pucklechurch Primary School was submitted to the Council. Although the school's bid won the support of some Councillors, including Cllr. Sheila Cook, the Councillor responsible for schools, we were unable to win enough support to get our school the money it needs for these improvements. The campaign will be stepped up, and we aim to be successful in achieving the funding next year.

Oaktree Avenue

Some residents of Oaktree Avenue and adjacent roads recently completed a survey and many shared their concerns about the proposed scale of the new development and the implications for residents' quality of life. Unfortunately, the site has been allocated for development for some time now and preventing it will be almost impossible. However, we must continue to lobby for the desperately needed new doctors' surgery. Once the planning application is submitted, we will be closely scrutinising it and working with residents to ensure the impact is kept to a minimum and residents' views are made central to any decisions.

Speed Camera Safety Partnership
It has been difficult finding a date when both people who will be giving the presentation about the speed camera safety partnership are available. As soon as a date is known, it will be advertised in the village.

Heavy Vehicles
The problems with heavy vehicles on restricted roads are ongoing. Any complaints should be forwarded to John Fox, Principal Engineer, Broad Lane, Engine Common Lane Yate, South Glos. BS37 7PN

Revel AGM Set for 27th September

Revel 2006 events raised over £5,000 for village causes, and an additional £2,400 was donated by Diane Todd for monies collected for Bob Todd's memorial fund. The Revel Committee will decide on the distribution of funds to the village organisations and causes that have made an application. Cheques will be handed out at the Revel Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, 27th September, at 7.30pm in the Village Hall meeting room. Village organisations that have applied for funds should send a representative along to this meeting.

The Bob Stone Memorial Award for best contribution to Revel will be presented to the person or group deemed to have made the biggest contribution to Revel 2006.

Officers for the 2007 Revel Committee will be elected at the AGM. Anyone interested in joining next year's Revel Committee or who can contribute by taking on a specific task for Revel -- like running an event or stall, selling programmes or raffle tickets, helping with the pram race, or supervising the youth dances -- is invited to attend. We also encourage those who have suggestions for making Revel better to come along as well. We hope to see you on the night.

Have you got some storage space we can use?

Each year, the Revel Committee has to find places to store items that are used in Revel Week events, which makes it difficult to keep track of where everything is when we need it. Items include bunting, games, banners, stakes, flagpoles, beer glasses, and more. Could anyone spare about 6 cubic metres of clean, dry storage space where we could store our bits and pieces? If so, please contact Jacki Berry on 937 4437 or editor@pucklechurch.org.
