See the World from the Comfort of Your Village:
Revel Photo Exhibition

The judges have their work cut out for them in the second annual Bob Stone Memorial Photography Competition. Almost 100 photographs were submitted and the quality and variety of the images is again outstanding.

Come and see all of the entries in the Revel Photo Exhibition on Sunday, 24th September, fromOpen_18_1st_96_sm tiger02 10am until noon in the Scout Hut (next to the Village Hall). Winners will be announced and prizes awarded at 11am on the day. In addition to the cash prizes of £20 for first place, £10 for second, and £5 for third in each category, there are gifts donated by Ace Cameras in Yate and Rapid Snaps in Staple Hill.

As part of the exhibition, we will also be displaying a collection of photographs taken 25 years ago by Pat Scanlon, who documented an entire year of Pucklechurch life in from Revel 1981 to Revel 1982. If you've lived in Pucklechurch since then, come and take a trip down memory lane. If you haven't, then come and see what the village looked like during the blizzard of January 1982, when the snow was as high as an elephant's eye. Note the number and variety of shops the village used to have before the car was ubiquitous. Take a glimpse at how Pucklechurch celebrated the royal wedding. This special exhibit includes dozens of photos of the sports teams, clubs, school assemblies, plays, and events of a quarter century ago. I promise you, it's worth a look.

Update on Oaktree Avenue Development Proposals

Since the March issue of Pucklechurch News, which contained a brief update of the Oaktree Avenue proposals, the Council and Sovereign Housing Association have been discussing with Dr Seddon and his consultants the possibility of providing a doctor’s surgery on the site. Although much of the detail has yet to be worked out, there is broad agreement that the site would provide a favourable location for the surgery. The Primary Care Trust, which will provide funding towards a new surgery, also supports the location.  The overall scheme design is being progressed and we are considering locating the surgery at the western end of the site, next to the industrial estate and facing Oaktree Avenue.  This proposal was presented to Councillor Sandra Grant and the Parish Council at an informal meeting in May.

The planners require the whole site to be considered as a comprehensive scheme, so that the houses and the surgery complement each other in design and materials and so access onto the site takes into account the different uses. It is hoped that an outline planning application for the surgery will be submitted soon. Meanwhile, the housing proposals will be worked up in greater detail following consultation later in the year. It is also proposed to locate an equipped playground on the residential part of the site.

Take 5 Minutes to Guide the Next 10 Years of Local Development

You should find a leaflet entitled “Your Community Plan” in this issue of Pucklechurch News (if not, pick one up from shops, pubs and clubs around the village). It is important that you take five minutes to read it, tick off the areas that you think are important, and return it to one of the collection boxes in the village. Based on your input, a team of volunteers from the area will create a detailed survey that will be sent to each household and business early next year. To make sure it covers your areas of interest, you need to let them be known.

Further information can be found on the website at www.pucklechurch.org/html/plan.html or by calling Martin Smith on 937 4437 or Alan Holder on 937 2818.

Revel 2006 More Colourful Than Ever

Revel Logo 580
Over the course of a hot, sunny week in June, the village turned out for the Pucklechurch Revel events for a week of fun and fund-raising.

Attendance was poor, however, at the Revel Treasure Hunt and Pucklechurch Players' Race Night on Saturday, June 10th, and the Quiz Night on Sunday was attended mostly by the usual suspects. Here I need to chide the residents of Pucklechurch for not supporting Revel activities. Teams of volunteers put a lot of work into running these events, only to have a handful of people turn up. Revel Week events raise funds that support all kinds of village youth groups and clubs, as well as facilities like the Village Hall. Where are you, Pucklechurch residents?

On the other hand, Thursday night's Pram Race had more entries than we've seen in years. Maybe it was the nice weather. Maybe it was because the event was held on the Rec where spectators could actually see what was going on. Maybe it was the cash prizes. Or maybe it was because this year's event was held in honour of Bob Todd, who had always been a keen supporter of the Revel Pram Race. Whatever the reason, the turnout was excellent, with about 30 racers taking part. We saw some interesting costumes, and some great prams, though we had to feel sorry for the lads who struggled round the course in a wheelie bin! Race winners included the Footballers' Wives (Sharon Hendy and Mandi Smith) for the 18+ age group, the Wick Wheels (Dom Bannell and Shane Anthony) for the Under 18s, and the Terminators (Ben Pearce and Taz Bezer) for the Under 12s. The award for best fancy dress went to Football Crazy, Football Mad (Georgina and Harriet Bristow) for decking out in red and white on the day England beat Trinidad & Tobago.

The Beer Festival celebrated its 30th year with two nights of music, dancing, and, of course, a wide selection of beers and ciders, mostly from the southwest. The warm weather contributed to the atmosphere and the popularity of the events, with Saturday night being a complete sell-out.

On Revel Day itself, the festivities began with a colourful procession through village streets, again led by the Great Western Chapter of the Harley-Davidson Club. Prizes of £50 each went to 1st Pucklechurch Rainbows for their Strawberries & Champagne interpretation of the "Food, Glorious Food" theme, to Pucklechurch Playgroup's bakery on wheels for the best float, and to the WI for best adult entry with their rolling bawdy house captioned "W.I. Make Exceeding Good Tarts" (how very appropriate!).

The Rec played host to an array of fund-raising and fun fair stalls, with entertainment provided by the Harley-Davidsons and a clown act called Tom and Tilly Turnip. In the Village Hall the Craft Fayre offered an assortment of arts and crafts for sale.

The whole village owes a big thank you to members of the Revel Committee, the Beer Festival Committee, and the many others who made Revel Week happen.

‘Health Walk’ 23rd November

Join us on a new walk around Pucklechurch as part of South Gloucestershire's "Walking to Health"walking for health initiative. This time we will be going north and east of the village to explore some new routes and footpaths. As usual, it will be an informal and friendly walk with tea, coffee and biscuits to refresh mind and body at the end. This walk covers mostly even ground, but there are a couple of more challenging sections! We will walk for about an hour and cover about 3.5 miles.

Our dedicated team of walk leaders will lead you round the route and can answer any queries or concerns that you have.

Meet at 10.15am at the Pucklechurch Community Centre on Thursday, November 23rd. You can just turn up on the day, but if you would like any further information about this and other walks in our Winter Walks Programme, please do not hesitate to contact the Walking to Health Team on (01454) 866598 or by email at Christine.Farr@southglos.gov.uk
