December 2007

Dear Editor

Further to the article regarding sewerage (Pucklechurch News, September 2007), I discovered the following comments amongst notes written about Pucklechurch in about 1957/8:

The major item confronting the Parish Council at the moment and indeed since 1898 has been the question of sewerage disposal. No action was taken in this matter until the early 1950s when a public enquiry was held. In 1957 the sewerage scheme received the sanction of the Ministry of Health and it is hoped that the work will be implemented this year.

So it would seem that positive action regarding the sewerage problem takes place about once every fifty years – which is interesting when you consider that the new proposal to deal with it, at least in part, mentions a "design life" of 20 years. This has obviously been a long-term recurring problem which needs sorting out with more than a relatively short-term solution. I can just imagine the article in Pucklechurch News in 2029:"The major item confronting the Parish Council at the moment and indeed since 1898..."

Dear Editor

Congratulations to James Poole for coming third in the 'Specsavers Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2007' competition that was held on 9th October in London. James did extremely well, beating all the male finalists, as first and second places went to females. He proved he has what it takes. The overall comments from all the judges were very encouraging. He worked really hard and a great time was had by all, especially when rubbing shoulders with the celebrities! Myself, his mum and nan had the privilege of being at the event, and we were all extremely proud of him. Good luck, James, for the future and well done for getting so far in the competition.
