Letters to the Editor - September 2008

Dear Editor,

I'd just like to say how amazing it was to see how, as a community, we pulled together to express our opinions with regard to SITA's plan for an IVC at Batchfield Lane! More letters of objection generated than any other application in the history of South Gloucestershire Council -- a campaign largely driven by a small group of local people as well as members of the Parish Council. Isn't it a shame, therefore, to see how some have sought to use the result of that collective community effort in an attempt to score political points? Let's give credit where credit is due. This was not a victory for the politicians; it was a collective effort and undoubtedly down to our community spirit.

Dear Editor,

By the time you publish in September, I will have completed my second Meningitis Trust challenge, the five-day trek of the Great Wall of China. I only hope that it goes as well as the first challenge raising £5000 for the Trust.

In September 2007 when I signed up for the challenges, I was very apprehensive. I started immediately on the first challenge and have worked at it steadily all year. It has been a wonderful experience, and I have met some fabulous people, most of whom have been most helpful and generous. There are far too many to mention them all by name, but I must single out Pucklechurch Folk Dance Club, who supported my barn dance, and Pucklechurch Cricket Club, most of who appear to have sponsored me and have raised a magnificent amount for the Trust, and the Star Inn who held the Christmas raffle. As of the beginning of August, I have raised almost £4000. I am hoping that during September, more people will sponsor me and I will get closer to my £5000 target. If anyone wishes to help me do this, they can donate either through my web page justgiving.com/annasharpe1, via the tin in the Post Office, or sign a sponsor form at the Star Inn or the Rose & Crown. For all of you who have helped me, my heartfelt thanks.

As for the second challenge, that too is a new and unique experience for me. It is something that I will remember for a long time.

Dear Editor,

As I watched the Panorama programme called "Notes on a Dirty Island", I thought of our village. Bill Bryson -- a fellow American who also fell in love with Britain and decided to call it home -- was talking about litter and its impact on this beautiful country. He said litter begets more litter and that there is evidence of a link between litter and crime. A little litter tells people that somebody in their community doesn't care. A lot of litter tells people that nobody cares, and this attitude carries over into other behaviour. I'm not saying that Pucklechurch is drowning in litter or that it's a hotbed of anti-social behaviour, but we do have our issues, don't we?

Bryson said that there are two problems with litter: the first is throwing it down and the second is picking it up. If you're part of the first problem, you know what to do. Tackling the second problem requires all of us to care about what litter says about our community and do something about it. If it's a little, pick it up. If it's a lot, call South Gloucester's Street Care Department on 01454 868000 or email them on streetcare@southglos.gov.uk and ask them to clean it up.

Dear Revel Committee,

Thank you Revel Committee and numerous unnamed helpers for a wonderful Revel Week and a very special thank you for such a wonderful Revel Day.

Dear Editor,

When our cheerleading team performed at this year's Pucklechurch Revel, we had a lot of enquiries about how to join our group. We'll be having tryouts on Sunday, 14th September, at the Downend Sports Centre. All ages and abilities are welcome and no experience is necessary. It's a fun way of getting into the sport of cheerleading and dance. Contact me on 07920064608 to book a tryout place, or visit our website www.freewbs.com/bpacheer for more details.

Sammi Connell,
Black Panther All Stars
