Pucklechurch Sports Football Club

We are now well into the second half of the season with the Club’s various sides enjoying mixed fortunes. Of the three senior sides, the first team is unfortunately struggling in the Gloucestershire County League; however, we are hopeful that we can avoid relegation. The Reserves are doing much better and are currently on the edge of the promotion places. The 3rd Team, after a couple of poor seasons, is comfortably in mid-table.

We have six junior sides, and the pick of these at present is the Under 15 side, which is currently in runners-up spot in their division of the Avon Youth League.

Lads v Dads on New Year’s Day

The second of these challenges took place this year with the Dads winning and retaining the trophy. The games are definitely becoming harder and it can only be a matter of time before the Lads get their first win.

Quiz

The inaugural quiz evening at the Star saw a team from the senior section of the club (Andy Frankcom, Tom Hartree, Mike Wiltshire, and John Whelan) take the prize and our new trophy (which we hope will hotly contested between seniors and juniors on an annual basis). Thirteen teams took part and the evening was enjoyed by all. Whilst this was not a fund raiser, we were able to raise over £100 to be split between the two sections.

Thanks to Bob Todd and his staff for helping make the evening a success and in particular to Julie and Karen for setting the questions.

This event is a prelude to a larger fund-raising quiz evening to be held at the village hall on Friday, March 19th. Everyone is welcome, but to help with the catering arrangements, please book tables in advance. For more information, ring Chris Belcher on 01454 324422.

Youth Coaching

The Junior Section is holding a coaching day on Sunday, 18th April, on the Rec. Whilst this is mainly for the existing squads, new players are welcome and we hope to use this to try to promote a new Under-8 side for next season. Anyone interested, contact the club via the football page of the Pucklechurch website at: www.pucklechurch.org/html/football.html, or ring Trevor Murphy on 937-3951.

Pucklechurch Short Mat Bowls Club

(Due to an oversight this article was not featured in the printed version.)

The Pucklechurch Short Mat Bowls Club meets at the Village Hall and regular bowling sessions are held in the hall as follows:

Sunday afternoons  2.30 to 5.00pm
Monday evenings  7.30 to 10.00pm
Wednesday evenings   7.30 to 10.00pm

Although played on specially made mats that can easily be put down on the floors in village halls and the like, short mat bowling is very similar to the original form of lawn bowling enjoyed by a great number of people over the centuries. (It should not be confused with 10-pin bowling) The special mats for short mat bowling are about half the length of lawn bowling greens, allowing the sport to be played indoors. To compensate for any supposed advantage that might give to the playing of the game, a wooden block is placed in the middle of the short mat, which players have to avoid when delivering their bowls. You will have noticed bowling being played on outdoor greens in the summer with players often in their whites. Short mat bowling is more informal and does not have a dress code for club sessions.  What is more, the cost of playing short mat is very modest indeed.

Short mat bowling is a challenging but thoroughly enjoyable sport for persons of all ages. As many ladies play as men, and they do well at the game. Because it takes place indoors, the game is played throughout the year. This becomes a distinct advantage, as it is easy to get hooked! Like most sports, bowls clubs play in leagues, thus there are many opportunities to travel to play other clubs, and there are various other fixtures and competitions in which members can take part.

The Pucklechurch Short Mat Bowls Club is very friendly and is developing its social side.  New members are always welcome. Anyone who wants to find out if they like the game can simply come along just before the start of any of the regular bowling sessions listed above. Better still, talk to Les Whittock first (937-2090), who will gladly answer any queries you might have and arrange for you to be introduced at your first session. It's much easier than just walking in to a strange venue.
