Sunday 4th May- Monday 5th May 2008

scarecrowSt Thomas a Becket Church invites all Pucklechurch organisations and residents of Pucklechurch and the surrounding villages to make scarecrows and place them in prominent positions in gardens around Pucklechurch.

If you live outside the village and are having difficulty finding a garden in which to place your scarecrow, please mention this when you ring to enter your scarecrow.   We will find a location for it!

The theme for the scarecrows is "Characters from fact or fiction."   There is no limit to the number of scarecrows in one scene.  Scarecrows representing different topics however, will require a separate entry.  There is no charge for entering a scarecrow.

To enter, please ring the co-ordinator on

(0117) 303 9190 with the following information:

1. Details of the character you have chosen

2. A clue, either cryptic or a simple sentence, to help people guess the scarecrow’s identity

3. Your name, address and telephone number

CLOSING DATE FOR ENTRY IS FRIDAY 18th APRIL 2008

It is important to do this as we will be creating the route for the trail from the 18th April.

There will be one prize for the best scarecrow as voted by the general public who take part in the trail. Please make sure that you display the age of the maker on your scarecrow.  Please ensure that it is kept indoors overnight to stop it catching cold and other reasons!

The Trail

On May 4th and 5th everyone is invited to take part in a scarecrow trail.   Guess the names of the scarecrows and discover parts of Pucklechurch you never knew existed!   There will be a cash prize for whoever guesses the most correct scarecrow names.  The winner will be notified during the week of the 5th of May.

Trail entry prices – Children aged 0-12 yrs £1.00, Adults £2.00, Family ticket £5.00

1.  To make the scarecrow frame, nail a 2 ft. long 2x4 “ pole to a 6 ft. long 2x4 “ pole to form a cross.  Dig a one foot deep hole and place wood frame in the hole and pack the soil firmly around the frame.

2.  Draw a face on one side of a white pillow case, near the center. Stuff the pillow case with newspaper. Place pillow case head on top of frame and tie shut with twine.

3.  Tie trouser legs closed with twine. Stuff trousers full with newspaper. Nail them to frame.

4.  Put shirt on frame, button shirt half way closed. Tie sleeve cuffs and waist closed with twine. Stuff shirt with newspaper. Button shirt closed.
