2004 Revel a Resounding Success

This year's Revel Week brought villagers and visitors together in a wide variety of activities that raised funds for local causes. From the Youth Disco on June 11th to the belated quiz night on June 25th, Revel events brought in approximately £4,500. Once again the Beer Festival at the Star Inn was the top fundraiser.

Revel Day itself had villagers lining the streets for the parade and a good crowd for the main event on the recreation ground. In spite of a few showers, people had a go on the rides, tried their luck on the games, and queued up for burgers. The Harley-Davidson display drew the biggest crowd as the bikes broke into two lines that competed to make the loudest roar -- and, boy, was it deafening! Many brave souls tested their mettle on the bucking bronco ride, while others were content with an egg-and-spoon race. The WI cream teas were both delicious and elegantly served.

The members of the Revel Committee, headed up by John Whelan, deserve a big thank-you for all their hard work. It takes months of hard work to pull together the events of Revel Week, and many more volunteers on the day.

The Revel Committee will be deciding how to distribute the funds in the coming weeks. If your organisation would like to be considered for a donation from Revel proceeds, please put your request in to any member of the Revel Committee by 7th September.

Pucklechurch WI

Members of the WI made the most of spring and summer by getting out and about in addition to our usual monthly meetings. We started with a day at the Devon County Show in May and enjoyed a real farming and countryside event with a variety of animals to see and local produce to sample. Then came the Ice Show on the Downs, which gave members, friends, and family a spectacular evening of colour, music, and exciting skating.

The weather was wonderful for our long weekend in Norfolk. We went to see Woburn Abbey on our journey up, found out how to look after our plants at the St Clements African Violet nursery, and had an interesting visit to Bury St Edmunds. We enjoyed a tour of Sandringham House, where we saw some of the rooms used by the Royal Family and the magnificent grounds, museum, and church. Our last day was spent in Cambridge, which has so much to see and do: exploring the ancient town, visiting the colleges, churches, chapels, and gardens, and, of course, punting on the river. The holiday was voted a great success by all for its friendship and fun, variety of activities, and excellent hotel. Thanks are due to Norma Pratt for her hard work and brilliant organisation of all our trips.

In recent months, members of the WI have gone to @Bristol for a digital photo day, played golf and croquet, and enjoyed a friendly skittles match. We rounded this off with our "Sport for All" float on Revel Day, where we certainly dressed the part. In the afternoon, we were delighted to welcome so many people to our famous cream teas and thank everyone for their support. We are grateful to the Scouts for the loan of their hut and excellent kitchen facilities.

Our recent speakers have included a dedicated charity worker for blind people, a nutritionist who spoke about healthy eating, and a very amusing retired policeman.

Plans for the next few months include a fashion show, a trip to London, a county quiz, our autumn meeting with Kate Adie as guest speaker, and our Christmas craft workshop. WI members are also looking forward to their next foray into Europe: a trip to Bruges in September.

Our meetings are held in the Homefield Centre on the third Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm. We are always pleased to welcome visitors and new members. Contact Pauline Alway (937 3141) for more information.

Happy Circle

How quickly the year is going! We will be taking our fifth trip of the year on September 7th, with lunch at the Compass Inn in South Petherton, then on to Clarks Village at Street. Our last trip of the year will be on October 5th, when we will cross the Severn Bridge and go to Lydney via the Forest of Dean, to Monmouth for lunch, and then onto Tintern for afternoon tea. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all who have supported our trips this year. Forthcoming events include:

  • September 21st -- Harvest bring and buy
  • September 28th -- Golden Age Choir
  • October 12th -- Brass Band
  • New members are always welcome. We meet Tuesdays 2-3.30pm in the Community Centre. For more information, call Pat Woods (937 3985).

    Twinning Association

At our AGM, we had a changing of the guard, as Lesley Broom took over the reins as chairperson from Viv Radnedge, and Angela Hallett was installed as our new secretary, replacing Valerie Broom. John Sexton continues as our treasurer.

A very pleasant Sunday afternoon was spent at the home of Elaine and Bob Stone for our annual horse race meeting and buffet lunch on 11th July. About 30 people enjoyed the opportunity to socialise.

On Friday, 24th September, we will once again be holding a quiz in the village hall. We have been assured that the questions are getting easier! Tickets, include a buffet supper, are £3.50 per person in advance -- available from Ann Smith (9372030) or Valerie Broom (937 2025), maximum of six per team. We look forward to seeing old quizzers and welcoming new faces.

Our annual trip to Pringy will take place from Friday, 22nd October, to Wednesday, 27th October. If you are interested in joining us, there are still a few places on the coach, contact either Ann or Valerie for more details or come along to our next meeting on Monday, 20th September, in the village hall meeting room at 8.00pm.

    Gardeners' Club

Our biennial weekend trip -- this year to the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project -- was well attended. This year's Summer Supper was held at Hodden Lane, and our hostess was thanked most warmly for her kind hospitality. The food was good, the wine was good, and the weather was good too until about 8.30pm when we had to take shelter under several hastily erected gazebos.

Our first meeting of the winter season will be held on Wednesday, 6th October, at 8.00pm, when Jean Drew will be giving a talk entitled "Up the Garden Path". Do come along, as new members are always welcome.
