Pucklechurch Revel Honours Bob Stone

Bob Stone was a very active member of the village and served on the Revel Committee for many years. His untimely death was a blow to all of Pucklechurch. The village meant a lot to Bob, and his family wanted to acknowledge this fact by using the contributions to his memorial fund to help the village. Elaine, Carrie, and Tim decided that the best way to distribute the funds was through Revel, so this year's Revel allocations will include a very generous amount in the name of Robert David Stone.

To recognise Bob's contributions to Revel and the village, the Revel Committee has proposed an annual Bob Stone Award for the individual or organisation that makes the biggest contribution to Revel. A permanent plaque, displayed in St Thomas à Becket church, will honour each year's winners.

One of Bob's many services to Pucklechurch was being the official unofficial photographer of village events. In Bob's honour, the Revel Committee will sponsor a photography competition to encourage villagers to take up where Bob left off. See separate article for details.

Supporting Revel was not Bob's only involvement in village life. Bob and Elaine moved to Pucklechurch in 1971 when they were newly married. Over the years Bob an avid supporter of village football and played badminton, skittles, and darts on village teams. As Carrie and Tim grew up, Bob helped out with Cubs, Scouts, the Youth Club Committee, and school events. He was a member of the CA Executive Committee, a founding member of the Twinning Association, and an honorary member of the Pucklechurch Players. Bob, with his helping hand and his ready smile, will be sorely missed by so many groups and so many people.

New Ideas Invited for Revel Parade

This year, fewer lorries are available to make floats for the Revel Parade. Oh, dear! What shall we do? How about getting more creative? Fewer very large vehicles will also make the parade flow more smoothly, avoiding the delays caused when these long lorries negotiate the tight turns round our tiny roads.

In February, village organisations were invited to a special meeting of the Revel Committee at which alternative ideas for parade entries were presented. In brief, new approaches could take the form of traditional or wacky marching drill teams; small floats that are pulled by people, horses, or even dogs; self-propelled ideas like bicycles, scooters, skates, wheelbarrows, and wagons; or floats that float (because they're made of helium balloons). Think up ideas that walk and roll! Take a look at the Pucklechurch website's Revel pages for some parade entry examples from other places: http://www.pucklechurch.org/html/revel.html

The theme for this year's Revel is "all creatures great and small", so how about a marching menagerie of some sort? Colour and noise makes a parade more fun and exciting. Create a colourful banner to carry along the route. Dress up and sing a song! Bring a boom-box along with your marching music or theme song. Dance along the road to a funky beat. Play a mobile badminton or football game, complete with cheering spectators. There's so much you can do that doesn't require a large petrol-driven vehicle! Equestrian entries welcomed, though nervous horses may not appreciate the company of the Harley-Davidsons that will lead the parade once again. Prizes of £50 each will be awarded to the best children's float, best children's walking group, and best entry by an adult group.

Revel 2005 Promises Something for Everyone

Dust your hats off, pixies! Plans are well underway for this year's Pucklechurch Revel. The lineup of Revel Week events truly includes something for everyone.

Kicking off with a treasure hunt on Saturday afternoon, 11th June, all are welcome to follow the clues and find the treasure. There will be goody bags for children, but remember that children under school year 6 must be accompanied by an adult. On Saturday night, enjoy a flutter at the races at Pucklechurch Players' race night. Have fun racing the wooden horses and raising money for Revel. Bar and snacks will be available. Entry is £1 on the door.

On Sunday morning, it's the Revel Ramble. Sponsored by the Twinning Association, all are welcome to join in this gentle walk of about four miles, which starts off from the Village Hall car park at 10am and typically ends up at a pub!  Don't get too tired out though, because Sunday evening is the Revel Quiz Night. Rest your legs and exercise your mind with our general knowledge questions. Entries are £1 per person, with a maximum of six people per team.

Mums and Minors will be hosting their open day on Monday, June 13th. Come to the Village Hall between 1.00 and 3.00pm for this casual social for all pre-school children and carers. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available.

Tuesday night will bring junior folk dancing to the Village Hall. This event welcomes children from school years 1 to 6. Soft drinks and sweets will be on sale. Come and have a whirl, kids!

On Wednesday, all are welcome to come to Pucklechurch Primary School for a free concert. The morning performance is at 10.45am and the evening performance at 7.00pm.

The annual pram race will be run on Thursday evening, and this year we want the fancy dressers to win! There will be prizes for the best fancy dress, as well as the fastest times for under 18s and 18+. There will also be a time penalty of 1 minute for each team member not in fancy dress. Pick up entry forms and rules from the Post Office, the Star Inn, the Pucklechurch Social Club, the Fleur de Lys, or the Sports & Social Club (Top Club). Teams consist of two members, and "prams" must be pushed (not motorised or pedal driven). There's no fee to enter, but signed entry forms must be received before you can participate. To encourage spectators, there will be a bouncy castle on the Rec and the Star Inn will host a barbecue, so come along and watch the great race!

There will be a youth disco on Friday night for kids from school years 7 to 11. Tickets are £3, available from Mandi Smith, 937-4392. Refreshments will be available for sale during the evening.

The Pucklechurch Beer Festival, one of the longest running real ale festivals in the country, will offer a fine selection of real ales and ciders on Friday and Saturday nights. Tickets are £6 per night, and a limited number of two-night tickets are available for £10 each, and include a souvenir mug and your first half-pint. Crossfire returns to the festival on Friday night, playing their brand of classic rock music from the ‘70s through to the present day, and on Saturday night Cable Co. brings their carefully crafted vocals set to intelligent energetic rock music. There will be a barbecue both nights featuring burgers, hot dogs, and those scrumptious steak sandwiches. And don't forget to bring some change for the raffle!

Saturday, June 18th, is Revel Day itself. The festivities begin with the Revel Procession, a parade through the village starting at the Village Hall car park at 12:30pm. This year's theme is "all creatures great and small". (Read more about the parade in the related article.) The Craft Fayre too starts at 12.30, with a variety of arts and crafts stalls open until 5.00pm in the Village Hall, where there will also be tea and biscuits available. On the Recreation Ground, stalls and rides will open at 1.00pm. Arena events will include a gun dog and falconry display, a bigger and better Harley-Davidson rev-off, and the traditional children's competitions.

On Sunday evening, Revel Week will draw to a close with a service of thanksgiving at St Thomas à Becket church.

For further information about dates, times, and places, see the Revel calendar of events.

Attention Village Organisations: Submit requests for Revel funds by July 30th to Cyndi Hill or any member of the Revel Committee.

Revel Photography Competition

A new Revel-sponsored event will take place this year: the Bob Stone Memorial Photography Competition. Bob was the official unofficial photographer for Pucklechurch, and this competition will help us fill the gap in our record of village life. This will be the chance for young and old alike to show off their eye for a good picture.

There will be three categories and three age groups, each of which will be judged separately for first, second, and third place. Judges will consider visual impact, composition, and image quality. The categories are:

  • Pucklechurch Village Life -- Photos of buildings, people, scenery and events (like Revel!) that show where and how we live
  • Nature -- Animal, vegetable or mineral; photos that capture the beauties and beasts of the natural world
  • Open -- Any other subject, including travel, portraits, pets, abstracts, architecture, or anything else
  • The age groups are: 11 and under, 12-17, and 18 and over.

All suitable entries will be displayed in the Village Hall on Saturday, September 17th, 2005. Prizes are yet to be determined, but the winning entries in the Village Life category will be used to create the Pucklechurch postcard series, which will give you a further chance to show off your work.

Who may enter? Competition is limited to residents of Pucklechurch, Shortwood, Abson, Westerleigh, Hinton, Doynton, and Dyrham and any student attending Pucklechurch Primary School. Entrants must be amateur photographers. Members of the Revel Committee may enter because the judges will be neutral third parties.

What do I submit? Images must be the photographer's own work. Each individual can submit a maximum of two photos per category. All entries must be submitted as small prints (3-1/2x5", 4x6", or 5x5") and may be colour or black and white. Photographs may be printed from film or digital sources and may be cropped from the original image. There is no rule about when the photograph was taken (i.e., they may be old or recent). Include the following information on the back of the print: category, age group, your name, address, phone number and/or email address. To protect the print, you may want to write this information on a large label and then stick the label to the back of the print. On a separate piece of paper, include a description of 100 words or less, which must not mention your name. If the image has been manipulated or retouched in any way, please note this in the description. Winners will be asked to submit digital images or negatives that can be scanned so the winning images can be displayed on the Pucklechurch Community Website. All participants must give the Revel Committee the rights to use the images for display, web publishing, and postcards.

When and where do I submit my photos? Entries must be received by 1st September 2005. Place your photo and a sealed envelope and drop off at 48 Abson Road, Pucklechurch.

Look for posters and further details about the contest on Revel Day and over the summer.

HMYOI Ashfield Independent Monitoring Board --
The Independent Watchdog

Here's an offer you don't see every day: the chance to acquire a set of keys to Ashfield Young Offenders Institute Pucklechurch. People from all backgrounds and walks of life are invited to apply to become members of the Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) to ensure that trainees are being cared for in accordance with national rules.

IMB Chairman Arthur Williams said, "IMB membership is one of the most unusual forms of voluntary public service, and the United Kingdom is one of the very few countries in the world that appoints members of the public to monitor its prisons and young offender institutes. Board members spend about two days a month in Ashfield, talking to trainees and staff and attending monthly meetings so that we can satisfy ourselves that proper standards of care and humanity are being maintained."

Board members are unpaid; however, expenses are covered and the work can be extremely rewarding.

For more information or an application pack please contact the IMB Secretariat, telephone 0870 2678149 or email imb@homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk.

Attention Dog Owners

The pavements of our village are used by young and old, humans and canines. Dog mess poses an unpleasant hazard to all. The best thing is to teach your dog to go at home, where it's easier to clean up. However, if your dog fouls the pavements, streets, lanes, footpaths, or public open spaces when you're out and about, make sure you clean up after him. You can buy poop scoops cheaply at pet shops and some supermarkets. If you don’t have a scoop with you, always be prepared with a plastic bag when you go out with your dog. Dispose of the waste in the dog bins provided or your black bin at home.

Dog mess can contain a number of things that make people ill, such as toxocara canis, a type of roundworm. If the eggs of this worm are swallowed, this can result in a range of symptoms from aches and pains to bronchial conditions and loss of eyesight. This is a particular threat to small children, who are less resistant to infections and who are often the ones who accidentally step in or fall in the mess.

So scoop that poop! It's the law. South Gloucestershire has given dog wardens the power to issue a $50 on-the-spot fine to anyone allowing their dog to foul a public place. So be a good neighbour and a good citizen: clean up after your dog.
